Latvia's population nears 1.85 million at start of 2026

Latvia's population was 1,845,000 at the start of 2026, a decrease of 15,500 from the previous year. The decline is attributed to more deaths than births and negative net migration, though the population decrease is the smallest in three years. The proportion of older residents increased, while the proportion of children decreased. The share of Latvians in the population rose to 63.8%, and the number of Latvian citizens also increased.
