Lady in Blue statue unveiled on Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth

A sculpture titled Lady in Blue by artist Tschabalala Self was unveiled on London's Trafalgar Square Fourth Plinth, becoming the 16th artwork on the site since 1998. The statue will remain for two years. The bronze figure, patinated with Lapis Lazuli pigment, depicts a contemporary London woman and replaces Mil Veces un Instante. Self said the work honors an ordinary person rather than a historic figurehead, representing the city's spirit. Self was selected in March 2024 by the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group. The plinth was empty for over 150 years before the commissioning program began in 1998, with new sculptures installed roughly every two years.
