Labour members back higher defence spending but sceptical on welfare, poll finds

A new poll of 788 Labour members reveals they are sceptical of increased welfare spending and supportive of higher defence spending, with health, the economy, and cost of living ranked as top issues. The survey, conducted from late June to late July, shows only 7% prioritise welfare benefits. The findings show 47% of members believe the government spends too much on welfare, while 52% support raising taxes to fund the current bill. Additionally, 73% back more social care spending, and 68% want increased defence spending, with most supporters favouring higher taxes on high earners. The poll, shared with Downing Street strategists, comes as Andy Burnham won the leadership unopposed.
