Kyushu University study finds antioxidant LASSS may combat age-related muscle loss

A study suggests the antioxidant LASSS may protect a key muscle-repair protein from age-related damage, potentially helping combat age-related muscle loss. Kyushu University researchers found LASSS suppressed nitration of hepatocyte growth factor and doubled its ability to bind muscle stem cells. In mouse models, it reduced muscle atrophy from disuse. The findings, published in Scientific Reports, may lead to treatments for sarcopenia, which can begin in a person's 30s and accelerates after 60. Human trials and longer studies are still needed.
