Kyiv residents sleep in metro stations as Russian attacks intensify

Residents of Kyiv are increasingly sleeping in underground metro stations, trading comfortable beds for mattresses on platforms due to fear of escalating Russian attacks. The constant threat of drones and ballistic missiles has driven many to seek shelter below ground for safety. Among those sheltering at Lukyanivska station is Anna Fesenko, who fled from Bakhmut, and her 15-year-old daughter Maria. They sleep alongside pensioners and other families, having formed close bonds. The nearby missile factory, a key Russian target, has been struck over 20 times, with attacks also hitting a market and civilian areas. The attacks on Kyiv have intensified, with air alerts sounding for 13 hours during a recent day. Resident Nataliia urged Swedes to be cautious, referencing the Babi Yar massacre, and expressed uncertainty about when the war will end. The group finds comfort in their shared fear and mutual support.
