Kunstmuseum Basel confirms authenticity of Paul Gauguin's final self-portrait

Paul Gauguin's final self-portrait, previously disputed as a fake, has been confirmed as authentic by the Kunstmuseum Basel. The museum's investigation found the attribution valid, though parts of the face were retouched after Gauguin's death, likely using pigments not available until after 1918. The retouching, visible in a 1926 photograph, is considered part of the painting's history and will not be removed.
