Kolkata's Holi celebrations saw significantly reduced violence

Holi celebrations in Kolkata this year were less violent compared to previous years. Police arrested 161 people for disorderly conduct, a 63% decrease from 2024, and seized 34 liters of illegal liquor, down from 47 liters last year. Despite some serious incidents, including a murder and a stabbing, the overall situation was calmer. About 21,000 police officers were deployed to maintain order, with increased patrols and coordination meetings to address potential issues. Residents reported a more peaceful atmosphere, with fewer disruptions during the festivities. Police had prepared in advance, identifying trouble spots and implementing measures to prevent disorder.
