Kochi faces severe flooding as prolonged high tide slack inundates homes and water sources

Kochi experienced severe tidal flooding earlier this month, affecting homes and water sources, particularly in Kadavanthra and Edakochi. A prolonged high tide slack, lasting over two hours, contributed to this unprecedented flooding. On January 3, the tidal gauge recorded a high of 1.62 meters, significantly higher than the usual 10-15 minute duration of slack tide. This extended period allowed water to spread more widely, causing greater damage. Local officials are calling for dredging of water bodies to improve drainage. However, experts warn that improper dredging could worsen flooding. A detailed survey of Vembanad Lake is recommended to identify areas needing targeted dredging.
