Knott's Xcelerator roller coaster reopens after two-year closure due to mechanical issues

Knott's Xcelerator roller coaster, which opened in 2002, has faced ongoing mechanical issues. It recently reopened after a two-year closure for a new hydraulic launch system. Similar coasters, like Kingda Ka and Top Thrill 2, are currently closed. Three other Intamin Accelerator coasters have been relocated or shut down. Kingda Ka will be removed in 2026, while Formula Rossa and Top Thrill 2 are expected to reopen after repairs. The aging hydraulic launch systems have led to frequent maintenance challenges. Newer technologies are replacing these systems in some rides. Zamperla has introduced magnetic launches to improve reliability. Xcelerator's updated system is expected to last 8 to 13 years.
