Kitesurfer from Diest dies after wind gust throws him into jetski at Oostduinkerke

A kitesurfer from Diest, Belgium, has died after being violently blown into a rescue jetski on a beach in Oostduinkerke, suffering fatal head injuries. The 63-year-old was preparing his equipment at the SYCOD watersport club yesterday at 3:15 p.m. when a sudden wind gust hurled him backward into the club's jetski, breaking his helmet. Rescuers revived him, but he died in hospital that evening. Because he carried no identification, police used a key on his harness to trace his address and notify his wife. The club called it a tragic accident, noting he would likely have survived had he landed on sand.
