Kenya's enforced disappearances hit record high in 2024

Kenya recorded its highest number of enforced disappearances in 2024, with 55 people reported missing after allegedly being taken by state agents, according to civil society coalition Missing Voices. The coalition says 190 people have been forcibly disappeared since 2019, with many still unaccounted for. The 2024 spike followed June anti-Finance Bill protests and a police crackdown, while figures fell to six in 2025 and 19 were reported in 2026. Kenya signed the International Convention on Enforced Disappearance in 2007 but has not ratified it or enacted specific legislation criminalising the practice. A campaign launched in Mombasa seeks legal reforms, while the government has set aside Sh2 billion for reparations.
