Kenya launches football tournament to fight GMO misinformation

Kenya's National Biosafety Authority is launching a football tournament to counter misinformation about genetically modified organisms, using the sport's popularity to deliver science-based information to communities. The initiative, starting Sunday in Kakamega County, features 112 teams from five subcounties competing over three months under the theme "Playing for facts." Acting CEO Ann Karimi said the tournament will engage youth, farmers, and community leaders with accurate information on biosafety and GMOs. Organized with the Football Kenya Federation, the event runs from September 6 to December 23, culminating in a regional championship. It also aims to develop grassroots football talent and improve facilities while addressing public misconceptions about GMOs.
