Kenwood residents remain displaced two years after deadly apartment fire
Residents of the Harper Square Cooperative in Kenwood are still displaced two years after a fire that killed one person and injured eight others. The fire occurred on January 25, 2023, and about 140 residents were affected. Some residents have recently moved back, but many express concerns about the building's lack of fire sprinklers. High-rise buildings built before 1975 are not required to have them, leaving over 600 such buildings in Chicago vulnerable. Residents are frustrated with the management company for not providing clear information. While they want to return home, fears of another fire linger, impacting their mental well-being.
