Karnataka MP Surya pushes for stronger RERA enforcement in new apartment bill

Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya has urged the Karnataka government to ensure the proposed Karnataka Apartment Bill, 2026, complements the national RERA law rather than creating a parallel legal framework. He submitted a representation to Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on July 31. Surya welcomed the replacement of two outdated 1972 apartment laws but argued the core problem is weak enforcement of existing rights, especially regarding common areas and governance. He proposed seven points, including operationalising RERA's Section 17 to mandate time-bound transfer of common areas and land to registered apartment associations. The BJP MP stressed the new legislation should strengthen RERA implementation and provide a transparent, accountable system for lakhs of apartment owners across Karnataka. The state government is currently drafting the unified bill to modernise apartment ownership rules.
