Kanto, Tokai, Tohoku face disaster-level rain risk as linear precipitation zones forecast

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued linear precipitation zone forecast information for Tokyo, Aichi, and 12 other prefectures across the Kanto, Tokai, and Tohoku regions, warning of potentially disaster-level heavy rain. Rain has already begun falling across a wide area, including Chiba Prefecture, which suffered heavy rain damage last month. The agency predicts linear precipitation zones may form from the night of the 6th through the 7th. Warm, moist air from a typhoon is stimulating the autumn rain front, with intense rain clouds approaching the mainland. Hachijojima recorded approximately 110 millimeters of rainfall in one hour, causing rivers to swell dramatically, while heavy rain has also persisted in Kyushu. On Yakushima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, over 600 millimeters of rain fell in three days, more than double the September monthly average, causing water outages affecting over 200 households. A damaged water intake at a local source has left residents without water since midday the previous day, with recovery efforts hampered by severe river flooding.
