Kanlaon Volcano reports 11 earthquakes and large plumes of gas in the Philippines
Kanlaon Volcano experienced 11 volcanic earthquakes and emitted large plumes on January 10, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The plumes reached heights of 1,000 meters and drifted southeast. PHIVOLCS reported the volcano released 5,763 tonnes of sulfur dioxide. The volcano remains inflated, and Alert Level 3 is still in effect, indicating intensified unrest. A six-kilometer evacuation zone is in place. The volcano poses risks of explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, and other hazards. Kanlaon last erupted on December 9, leading to a state of calamity in nearby areas.
