Kalida chemical spill closes U.S. Route 224 for hours

A chemical spill in Kalida closed a section of U.S. Route 224 for seven hours on March 13. The spill involved 250 gallons of Atrazine 4L, a herbicide, leaking from a punctured container on a semi-truck. The leak began around 8:30 a.m. near Ralph Street. Emergency crews contained the spill, preventing it from reaching local storm drains and the Ottawa River. Cleanup efforts included assistance from Nutrien Ag Solutions. Residents may notice a white residue on the road until the next rain. Local authorities, including the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, were notified of the incident.
