Judge doubts gang member's commitment to change during sentencing
Te Kuri Samuel, a 37-year-old member of the Black Power gang, was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for drug and firearm charges, as well as domestic violence. A judge expressed skepticism about Samuel's desire to change his life. Judge Tony Snell noted Samuel's lengthy criminal history, including 62 previous convictions. Despite Samuel's claims of wanting to distance himself from gang life, the judge highlighted that such statements were often repeated without follow-through. Samuel's charges included supplying methamphetamine and unlawful possession of firearms. The judge acknowledged Samuel's difficult upbringing but ultimately deemed him a high risk for reoffending, leading to a significant prison sentence.
