He mentioned that nepotism worked against him, as he had to audition six times to prove his talent despite being the son of actor James Brolin. At 16, Brolin was living on his father's couch after being kicked out by his mother. He had missed many school days and decided to pursue acting, going on 350 auditions to demonstrate his commitment to casting directors. Brolin eventually landed the role of Brand Walsh in "The Goonies," which he described as a lucky break. He acknowledged that his lineage may have helped him initially, but he felt he was the right fit for the character.
