Jon M. Chu adjusts 'I'm Not That Girl' for emotions

Director Jon M. Chu has discussed his changes to the song "I’m Not That Girl" in the upcoming film adaptation of "Wicked." This song features Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, as she expresses her feelings of being an outsider. Chu highlighted how the pacing of the song has been altered to create a more emotional experience. "We wanted to pace it down because it was a different type of song," he said. He aimed to slow it down to give it a melancholy feel, emphasizing the heartfelt nature of the lyrics. He explained further that the song starts in silence, with Elphaba bringing in the music. This change was a collaborative effort with the composer, Stephen Schwartz. Chu wanted the beginning to be seamless, avoiding a jarring transition into the music. Wicked: For Good is expected to be released on November 21, 2025.
