Jequié police arrest man, 76, suspected of raping girl, 11

A 76-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in Jequié, Brazil, on suspicion of repeatedly raping an 11-year-old girl. He remains in preventative detention pending judicial proceedings. The arrest warrant, issued by the city's 1st Criminal Court, was executed in Curral Novo. Authorities allege the man exploited a family connection with the victim, who has an intellectual disability, offered her money for silence, and she reportedly recorded the assaults. Police learned of the case last Saturday, after which they requested preventative arrest. The suspect, initially a fugitive, was later located. The girl will receive psychosocial support per Brazil's Child and Adolescent Statute.
