Japan's ruling coalition faces potential loss of majority in election, exit polls indicate
Japan's ruling coalition, led by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), may lose its parliamentary majority in the general election, according to exit polls. Voter dissatisfaction over a funding scandal and rising living costs has contributed to this potential shift. The LDP and its junior partner, Komeito, are projected to win between 174 and 254 of the 465 lower house seats. The main opposition party, the Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP), is expected to secure 128 to 191 seats, possibly leading to power-sharing arrangements. Ishiba, who recently took office amid controversy, faces low approval ratings. The LDP's ability to maintain its majority depends on its coalition with Komeito, which is also expected to lose seats. Official results will be announced on Monday.
