Japan on Alert as Super Typhoon Champi Approaches Okinawa
Japan is on high alert as Super Typhoon Champi, the 30th typhoon of the year, moves northward. The storm is expected to approach Japan's Sakishima Islands with violent winds and high waves around October 23-24. Typhoon Champi intensified rapidly from a weak storm to a "violent" super typhoon within six days, with maximum wind speeds tripling from 20 to 60 meters per second. It is the 30th typhoon this year, marking the earliest arrival of that number since record-keeping began in 1951. The typhoon has already caused flight cancellations in Okinawa, affecting approximately 5,450 passengers. South Korea's foreign ministry has issued safety advisories for Japan, Taiwan, and parts of China, warning of possible flight disruptions, flooding, and power outages through October 25.
