Italy's car tax exemption faces funding questions from regional opposition
Italy's government approved a car tax exemption for vehicles up to 80 kW and motorcycles starting in 2027, costing an estimated 2.3 billion euros, with the state promising full compensation to regions. The opposition criticizes the measure's funding and timing. Regional councilor Paolo Calvano (PD) questions how the government will finance the exemption, noting it relies heavily on Pnrr savings of 1.698 billion euros. He argues the measure, limited to 2027, appears designed for electoral gain ahead of upcoming votes. Calvano challenges Forza Italia to demand permanent status and full coverage of lost regional revenue, which funds healthcare, welfare, and public transport. The government says it intends to make the abolition structural in the next budget law.
