Italy fines Foodinho 5 million euros for breaching rider data privacy

Italy's data protection authority has fined Foodinho 5 million euros for mishandling the personal data of over 35,000 delivery riders. The company unlawfully shared riders' geolocation data with third parties without their consent. The regulator also banned Foodinho from using biometric data, such as facial recognition, for identity verification. The investigation revealed that geolocation data was transmitted even when riders were not working. This action follows a previous fine in 2021 and was prompted by a report of a rider's account deactivation after a fatal accident in 2022. Foodinho has been ordered to improve its communication with riders regarding account management and GPS usage.
