Italy approves hiring of 46,000 teachers for 2026/2027 school year

Italy's Council of Ministers approved a decree authorizing permanent hires for the 2026/2027 school year, including 46,642 teachers, of which 10,810 are support teachers for students with disabilities. The measure also covers 346 school principals, 79 educational staff, 2,628 Catholic religion teachers, and 12,284 administrative, technical, and auxiliary (ATA) personnel. Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara said the hires demonstrate the government's commitment to stabilizing the school system and ensuring teaching continuity. Premier Giorgia Meloni called the investment significant, stating it will bring nearly 11,000 new support teachers to schools to strengthen inclusion and provide necessary assistance to students with disabilities. She acknowledged ongoing challenges and pledged continued government intervention as needed.
