Israel escalates military operations in Gaza

Israel has resumed military operations in the Gaza Strip, ending a ceasefire that had been in place. The renewed offensive began with airstrikes that reportedly killed hundreds of Palestinians. Israel’s government is pushing for stricter conditions, demanding the release of hostages held by Hamas and the expulsion of the group from Gaza. Former President Donald Trump has voiced strong support for Israel's actions. He has suggested that Gaza’s population be resettled in other countries. Many Palestinian leaders and human rights experts have rejected this idea, calling it a violation of international law. The Israeli military claims it is targeting Hamas fighters to prevent future attacks. Since the war started, more than 48,000 Palestinians have died, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The US government had previously pushed for limits on civilian casualties but appears to have scaled back its involvement in urging Israel to spare civilians in this new phase. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government is currently very stable. Some far-right members of his cabinet have pushed for a continuation of the military actions. They are proposing to rebuild Israeli settlements in areas previously removed. Hamas, although still in control of Gaza, has lost many top leaders and fighters due to Israeli strikes. They recently launched rockets towards Tel Aviv, but without causing casualties. The broader regional response, including from Iran and Hezbollah, seems less organized than before. Criticism of Israel’s actions from the international community may also be weaker this time. The US has focused on healthcare and education funding issues, which have overshadowed protests against the Gaza conflict. Many European nations appear preoccupied with other political disputes and are unlikely to push back against Israel's military strategies.
