Investigators preliminarily believe the deadly Surfside condo collapse began in the pool deck. The pool deck's slab-column connections had critically low safety margins due to design understrength and misplaced reinforcement, initiating the collapse over seven minutes before the building fell. This issue existed since the building's construction over four decades ago, allowing the collapse to spread throughout the tower.
