Interpol: Online scams, phishing are top global cybercrimes

Interpol reports that online scams and phishing are the most widespread global cyber threats, using increasingly sophisticated tactics to deceive victims. These threats, often involving social engineering, account for the majority of cybercrimes worldwide, with phishing being particularly prevalent. Approximately 75-80% of cyber incidents involve a human element, such as falling for deceptive emails. Interpol is working with Malaysia and other nations to combat cybercrime, recognizing the challenges posed by evolving technologies like AI and encryption. Ransomware incidents in Malaysia rose significantly in late 2024.
