Intergenerational mobility drives innovation across European regions

Intergenerational mobility is linked to increased innovation in European regions. A new database, EUROPE-IGM-ATLAS, reveals that regions with higher intergenerational mobility, where children's educational outcomes are less tied to their parents', tend to be more innovative. This suggests that greater equality of opportunity fosters economic growth. The study found that while mobility generally boosts innovation, major innovation hubs may be an exception, with complex factors influencing their relationship between mobility and patenting activity.
