Injuries from illegal firecrackers rise in the Philippines this Christmas
In the Philippines, injuries from illegal firecrackers have increased this year compared to 2023. The Department of Health reported 43 firecracker-related injuries from December 22 to 25, a 54.57% rise from 28 cases last year. Most injuries involved minors. The DOH noted that 86% of injuries were linked to illegal firecrackers, particularly the "boga" and "five star." Hospitals are on high alert during the holiday season to manage potential health emergencies related to firecracker use. Local governments are encouraged to enforce stricter regulations on firecracker use, allowing only permitted community displays. Violators face fines and possible imprisonment under existing laws aimed at reducing firecracker-related injuries.
