Indonesia's new GovTech app to streamline public services
The Indonesian government plans to launch a new super app called GovTech that will combine all online services from ministries and state agencies. This initiative aims to improve efficiency and reduce corruption while also saving about 100 trillion rupiah (US$6 billion) in unnecessary spending. The app is set to be unveiled by President Prabowo Subianto during Independence Day celebrations on August 17. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the chairman of the National Economic Council, announced this development and mentioned that every family would need a bank account to receive social assistance promptly. GovTech will have four main functions. First, it will streamline online tax payments and ensure proper collection of mineral and coal sector royalties. Second, it will enable real-time monitoring of state projects and allow for data-driven evaluations of vendors to enhance state spending efficiency. Third, it will centralize services like citizenship administration, drivers' licenses, passports, and healthcare access. Fourth, it aims to simplify the business licensing process. This initiative follows previous attempts to streamline public services, as noted by former President Joko Widodo's efforts to integrate about 27,000 existing applications. However, investor confidence in Indonesia is currently low due to an early-year budget deficit and a 20 percent decline in state revenues. There are also concerns about the launch of Danantara, a new sovereign wealth fund managing assets from state-owned enterprises.
