India's Supreme Court denies Asaram interim bail, permits chosen caretaker

The Supreme Court denied interim bail to Asaram, who is serving life for sexually assaulting a minor, but allowed him a trained caretaker for round-the-clock assistance. The court kept his bail plea on health grounds pending and permitted him to mention the case if his condition worsens. AIIMS experts said he needs medical assistance but not hospitalization. He previously received a 20-day parole from the Rajasthan High Court. In May, the High Court upheld Asaram's conviction and life sentence in the 2013 rape case, while acquitting him of some charges. He was originally convicted in 2018 and is lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail.
