India's PE-Backed IPOs Surge as Market Evolves
India's private equity (PE) firms and their portfolio companies are increasingly pursuing initial public offerings (IPOs), reshaping the market's character and raising questions about valuation and stakeholder alignment. PE funds seek maximum valuation, while portfolio firms want long-term investor confidence, and public shareholders desire future growth. These interests can diverge at pricing and timing. In FY2025-26, India saw 108 main-board IPOs raising ₹1.76 lakh crore, with PE-backed listings comprising 35% of total issuances, up from 28% a year earlier. The trend reflects India's evolution from a bank-dominated economy to a globally integrated capital market. PE firms now use IPOs as a transparent exit route, recycling capital into new investments. Major listings like Reliance Jio, NSE, and Flipkart are expected, while Gaja Capital's listing marks a milestone for the PE industry itself.
