India's antibiotic procurement outpaces superbug treatment

India is a major contributor to the global superbug crisis, with a significant gap between antibiotic procurement and effective treatment of resistant infections. Despite procuring 80% of studied antibiotics, India could only treat 7.8% of estimated superbug cases. Antimicrobial resistance is a top global health threat, with Gram-negative bacteria increasingly resistant to treatments. The crisis is exacerbated by factors like over-the-counter antibiotic availability, poor sanitation, and misuse in agriculture, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries.
