Indian travelers surge in premium international tourism spending
Indian tourists are making a big impact on international travel. Their spending is quickly catching up to that of Chinese travelers, as noted by Chris Hartley, CEO of the Global Hotel Alliance. He spoke at the Skift India Forum 2025 and highlighted how easier visa rules and better travel infrastructure are driving this trend. In 2023, over 28 million people from India traveled abroad, exceeding pre-pandemic numbers. Hartley emphasized that most of these travelers seek luxury experiences. He mentioned that the gap in spending between Indian and Chinese tourists is approaching $100 billion. This represents a huge opportunity for the travel market. Previously, strict visa policies and limited flight options held back Indian travel. Now, those barriers are fading. Hartley added that about 80% of Indian travelers prefer well-known hotel brands, and nearly a quarter choose luxury accommodations, which is higher than in many other countries. India is also becoming a popular destination for foreign tourists. International hotel chains, like Minor Hotels, are entering the Indian market and plan to expand. The Global Hotel Alliance aims to increase its presence in India with 100 properties in the next few years. Despite the slow growth in new hotels, investment in India's hospitality sector is rising, supporting the demand for premium travel experiences. As this trend continues, India is set to solidify its role in the global tourism industry.
