Indian Navy commissions three new vessels in historic first
On January 16, 2025, the Indian Navy commissioned three new vessels: INS Nilgiri, INS Surat, and INS Vaghsheer. This marks the first time a destroyer, a frigate, and a submarine have been commissioned together. INS Nilgiri is a stealth frigate, part of Project 17A, designed for various naval operations. INS Surat is the first AI-enabled destroyer in the Navy, enhancing operational efficiency. INS Vaghsheer is a stealth submarine from the Kalvari class, designed for anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significance of these indigenous vessels in strengthening India's naval capabilities. The commissioning reflects a long-term effort to enhance the Navy's deterrent capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region.
