India to Seek Trade Reciprocity with China at Brics Summit to Ease Tech Curbs
India is weighing a push for greater trade reciprocity with China at the Brics Summit in New Delhi on September 12-13, aiming to ease Chinese restrictions on critical technologies, rare-earth magnets, batteries, and power equipment. The Commerce Ministry has reviewed customs measures and consulted industry on barriers, with concerns including delays in rare-earth magnets for carmakers and restrictions on ingot, wafer, battery cell, and HVDC transmission technology. Talks follow a thaw in ties, marked by recent diplomatic meetings and a 28% rise in Indian exports to China. India has also eased some domestic curbs, including allowing state-run BHEL to source critical equipment from China and granting exemptions to four Chinese-linked power equipment manufacturers, signaling a calibrated approach to economic engagement.
