India sees rising obesity rates as health concerns grow
Obesity rates in India are rising significantly, with around 24% of women and 22.9% of men classified as obese, according to the National Family Health Survey. This trend is influenced by urbanization, dietary changes, and lifestyle factors, including increased sedentary behavior. The Covid-19 pandemic has worsened the situation, leading to higher calorie consumption and reduced physical activity. Obesity is linked to various health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory problems, with a notable increase in related conditions. New guidelines for diagnosing obesity in India now include additional factors beyond body mass index. Two stages of obesity have been defined, focusing on the impact on organ function and daily activities, aiming for better treatment and management strategies.
