India prepares to open first vertical lift sea bridge in Tamil Nadu

ndtv.com

India's first vertical lift sea bridge is set to open in January in Tamil Nadu. The 2.08-km bridge will restore rail connectivity to Rameswaram island, replacing a 110-year-old bridge that was closed due to safety concerns. The new bridge features a lift span that can rise to allow ships to pass. While the design has been approved by IIT Madras and IIT Bombay, some safety concerns remain regarding corrosion and design deviations, which authorities are addressing. Train services to Rameswaram were suspended in December 2022 after the old bridge was deemed unsafe. The new bridge's construction began in February 2020, following a foundation stone laying by Prime Minister Modi in November 2019.
