India launches PAN 2.0 with QR code for secure identity verification and faster processing

India's Income Tax Department has launched PAN 2.0, an upgraded version of the Permanent Account Number card. This new system features a QR code for secure identity verification, faster issuance, and digital updates, enhancing accessibility and data protection. Applicants can apply for PAN 2.0 online through two portals: NSDL and UTIITSL. The e-PAN is free for the first three requests within 30 days, while physical cards are available for a nominal fee. Existing PAN holders can upgrade to access new features. Eligibility includes Indian citizens, businesses, foreign nationals, and minors. Current PAN cards remain valid, and the upgrade is optional. E-PANs are issued almost instantly, while physical cards arrive within 15 working days.
