India escalates probe into Apple's iOS 18 warranty terms after consumer complaints
India's consumer regulator has escalated its investigation into Apple's software warranty terms, alleging the iOS 18 update damaged iPhone functionality and forced costly repairs. Apple contests the claims, citing global industry standards, and could face fines or forced business practice changes if found guilty. The Central Consumer Protection Authority received complaints that iOS 18, rolled out in late 2024, caused screen display and microphone malfunctions, with repair costs for an iPhone 15 screen reaching 27,900 rupees ($291). Apple argues the no-warranty software clause is standard, noting only 75 complaints and that just 11% of iPhones still used iOS 18 by June 2026. India is a key growth market for Apple, with iPhone share rising from 4% in 2022 to 9% last year. The regulator's July 29 escalation signals dissatisfaction with Apple's responses, and investigators can seek documents and hold hearings before issuing a final report.
