India can unlock $1.5 billion wheat export opportunity as buyers diversify
India can unlock a wheat export opportunity exceeding USD 1.5 billion as global buyers diversify sourcing, according to an ASSOCHAM report, citing strong domestic production and the gradual reopening of exports. The report highlights India's record 120.7 million tonnes wheat harvest in 2025-26 and comfortable Central Pool stocks of 51.3 MMT, well above buffer norms. Export policy for specified wheat varieties and products shifted from Prohibited to Free, with India's price advantage of nearly USD 35 per tonne versus international rates. Bangladesh offers the strongest opportunity, with Egypt, Indonesia, Algeria, Morocco and the Philippines as potential markets. Global production is projected to ease to 819 MMT in 2026-27, while long-term success depends on consistent quality, better logistics and clearer export policies.
