India approves Assamese department at Visva-Bharati University

The Indian Ministry of Education has approved the creation of an Assamese department at Visva-Bharati University in Shantiniketan. This decision follows the language's recognition as a classical language last year. The approval includes the establishment of six teaching and eight non-teaching positions. The University Grants Commission recommended hiring one associate professor and three assistant professors for the new department. Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed support for the decision, highlighting its importance for promoting the Assamese language.
