Incentives boost vasectomy surgeries in Theni district, health officials report

The number of vasectomy surgeries in Theni district has increased due to enhanced incentives and changing attitudes. A year ago, health officials introduced a ₹5,000 incentive for no-scalpel vasectomy procedures, boosting participation significantly. Previously, only 22 vasectomies were performed between April 2022 and March 2023, with numbers in single digits before 2020. This year, 16 surgeries have already been conducted, with a goal of 50 by March 2025. The health department is conducting no-scalpel vasectomy camps at various hospitals and community health centers. Increased awareness and financial support are helping to change perceptions about male sterilization in the region.
