Imran Khan's release possible with May 9 apology
A key adviser to Pakistan's Prime Minister has suggested that Imran Khan could be released from jail if he apologizes for riots that occurred after his arrest in 2023. Rana Sanaullah, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs, made these comments during an interview on Geo News. The riots on May 9, 2023, involved violent protests that targeted military sites following Khan's arrest on corruption charges. Sanaullah emphasized that political struggles are the only way to succeed and dismissed any chances of a revolution through Khan's actions. Sanaullah indicated that if Khan expresses regret for the events of May 9, discussions about his release could take place. He mentioned that the government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, would not oppose Khan's release if the courts decided to let him go. Khan has been in Adiala jail for over a year on multiple cases. The comments come amid rising political tensions in Pakistan. Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, has been trying to regain momentum and is reaching out to opposition parties to protest against the current government. The situation may lead to increased political division in the country.
