Improving tuberculosis preventive treatment in seven high-burden countries in the Western Pacific Region

Routine data may overestimate tuberculosis preventive treatment gains in the Western Pacific Region, requiring validation through prospective studies or integrated surveillance. Additional high-risk groups beyond children and PLHIV, including healthcare workers, prisoners, and people with diabetes, need targeted preventive treatment pilots. Engaging the private health sector is also crucial for broader reach. Recent WHO guidelines recommend specific regimens for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis contacts, and operational research is needed to address policy-practice gaps and ensure sustainable financing for preventive treatment.
