IIT Madras launches India's first cancer genome database to boost research
IIT Madras has launched India's first cancer genome database, the Bharat Cancer Genome Atlas (BCGA), to enhance cancer research. This initiative aims to address the lack of representation of Indian cancer cases in global studies and improve diagnostic and treatment options. The BCGA includes data from 960 whole exome sequencing samples of breast cancer patients across India. It will help identify genetic variants specific to Indian populations, aiding in early detection and personalized treatment strategies. The database is a collaboration with Karkinos Healthcare and other institutions. It will also accept submissions from researchers to expand its resources for understanding cancer progression and improving healthcare in India.
