IIT Madras launches breast cancer atlas identifying rare mutations in Indian women
IIT Madras has released a new "breast cancer atlas" that identifies two gene mutations more common in Indian women with breast cancer. The atlas includes data from 480 patients and aims to improve early diagnosis and personalized treatment. The atlas is accessible online and will help in creating diagnostic kits and precision medicines tailored for the Indian population. Researchers noted that India is underrepresented in global cancer genome studies, which limits the development of effective treatments. The project began in 2020 and involved collaboration with several healthcare organizations. Future plans include developing similar genomic studies for other types of cancer, such as colorectal and pancreatic cancers.
