Huang Ruo's opera 'The Monkey King' to premiere at San Francisco Opera in November
Huang Ruo's opera "The Monkey King" will have its world premiere at the San Francisco Opera on November 14. The opera is based on a story from the 16th-century Chinese novel "Journey to the West" and features singing in English and Mandarin. The production will include eight performances through November 30, with a livestream on November 18. It will showcase the title character through a singer, a dancer, and a puppet, directed by Diane Paulus. This season, the San Francisco Opera will present six productions, down from eight last year. The company anticipates a $15 million budget shortfall but reports strong ticket sales and a younger audience demographic.
